About Me

What is this blog about? And why a blog when I already have a wiki site?

Well, I want someplace to do project updates and a spout on whatever comes to mind. A wiki is not a great place for that. Neither is Facebook.

I don’t add new posts every day; in fact, you’ll be lucky to see a new post once a week. When I do make a new post, I try to make sure it is interesting, original, and thorough. This blog functions somewhat as a public archive for information on woodworking, hand tools, and related topics.

Comments are sometimes enabled. If and when they are, I try respond relatively quickly, and I am always happy to discuss my projects further with anyone who is interested

In case you’re new around here, I lean on my many years in the IT industry in order to fund my various history-oriented hobbies. I have been involved in the SCA since my college days. That dovetailed nicely with my interest in woodworking and historical furniture.

With regard to historical furniture, my focus is on research and recreation, primarily the Anglo-American tradition, from about the 15th Century to the rise of industrial furniture making (roughly the mid-19th Century).

There will also be posts on other topics. Basically, whatever I feel like at the moment. Things like books (science fiction, fantasy, thrillers), computer topics (security, privacy, usage tips) and dogs. Huskies in fact, lots of pictures there. When you pretty dogs, it’s easy to take good pictures.

Sales

I am often asked whether I sell my work. Sometimes I do. But, I am not in the woodworking business. My main focus is creating the things I would like to have in my home (or home away from home when it comes to medieval furniture). I also make things for friends and family.

I generally don’t make items on spec. That is, make something and then hope someone buys it. What I have to sell is often either the byproduct of skill-building/exploration (test pieces for me but still functional items) or extras from a batch build of some item. You can find my current stock on my For Sale page.

I also maintain a home business with my wife where we resell vintage woodworking hand tools. These are mostly things like wooden molding plane, chisels, saws, anything made by Stanley before 1960, etc. The tools are acquired at auctions, estate sales, etc. and then resold at tool meets, conferences or on my eBay store.

I do occasionally take on commissions. Especially if it’s something I haven’t made before or is on my to-do list. If you want something I have made, let’s talk. First of all as an artisan, I want to build something that suits you as closely as possible. Secondly, we have to have that discussion regarding even hobbyist level prices for handmade items. I don’t do this for a living, but my time has a value.
