Dovetail #5

Dovetail No. 5C, mixing up species and thicknesses. It came out OK (finally). Why the letter? Well…that’s the story.

It’s tail-board No. 5, but the pin-board didn’t go well, gappy as hell. I couldn’t figure out why. So I very carefully laid out another pin-board from the tail-board. And really nailed the sawing. You can see just a wisp of a pencil line after the cut, perfect. But, it was gappy as hell again. Argh! What the hell is going on? Things have been going so well.

I sat there for a while staring at the gappy joint, looking at the saw lines and then it struck me, that wisp of a pencil line? It’s on the OTHER SIDE. GAH. I cut on the keeper side of the line, not the waste side.  TWICE. So, yeah, there was a saw kerf width all the way through the joint.

So, I cut another pin-board, traced and sawed carefully, and what do you know? It looks a hell of a lot better.

That will teach me to cut the tails at night and leave the pins to the next day, but it was late, my back hurt, etc.

Now it’s on to a couple of drawers for the workshop. If I can manage those, I’ll move on to the hanging shelf thing for Jess that was the reason I went down this road.
